Lunch Break at the Lao Market

That Phanom is a village on the Mekong, with Laos in sight just across the river.

The Thai government lets Lao people paddle over to sell fish and vegetables on the Thai side.

They also bring home-made cutlery and plastic bags of amphibians and huge orange beetles for deep-frying.

Today the fish are big and fresh and sales are brisk, but in Asia, lunch is as important as commerce.

The customers can wait. They don't mind. Taking a break, living small.
