Monks worshiping a safe: Where money is just money, living small

No, the monks aren't worshiping the safe. In fact, they probably don't even notice it. They are at the shrine at the highest spot in Thailand (2500 meters), greeting (not worshiping) a Buddha image there. Fact is, Thais are so comfortable about the symbols of money that they think nothing about placing matching safes right next to a holy image.  The safes have slots in the top for contributions. At Buddhist celebrations they carefully attach masses of 100-baht notes to big wooden trees and carry them aloft through the village in procession to the temple (see my post "Where money grows on trees".)  They also don't think it's a too personal question to ask your salary (or your age or your weight.)  In Thailand, money is just money, living small.
