These are not professional monks. They live the lives of novices while in school, then usually resume the lay life at 18 or 20. Even so, their routines are highly disciplined in everything from study to diet, and their lives are as simple and attachment-free as they can manage. These kids do not play video games into the night, or plot how they can slip out and get high with a girlfriend. They are learning to make do with almost nothing material, perhaps preparing for an adulthood of living small.
Thai Spirit provides a template for life lived small. The Great Recession has made a simpler life both inevitable and welcome. My teachers are Thai friends whose Buddhism is full of color and mystery, but utterly practical too. This blog is a tribute to the best of Thai Spirit and a place of dialogue about how to grow small.
