Like many Farang I tend to idealize the Theravada monks in Thailand -- exemplary, austere lives lived in the plainest of circumstances. That's why I was taken aback at first by this senior monk sneaking out back for a smoke. I soon smiled with the realization that it is precisely because these men are human and ordinary that their life choices inspire. Being a monk, living small, taking a smoke break.
Thai Spirit provides a template for life lived small. The Great Recession has made a simpler life both inevitable and welcome. My teachers are Thai friends whose Buddhism is full of color and mystery, but utterly practical too. This blog is a tribute to the best of Thai Spirit and a place of dialogue about how to grow small. Smoking Monk: Living Small
