This beautiful grandmother is a village elder, and a very busy woman. She has a business and a farm to run, and many philanthropies. Villagers come to her for guidance and wise counsel. I noticed that she had the gift of sitting still, composed, and receptive when for a brief moment she had nothing to do. Decades of Buddhist practice have equipped her to turn even a spare minute into a peaceful meditation. It was doing nothing for a moment and loving it, living small.
Thai Spirit provides a template for life lived small. The Great Recession has made a simpler life both inevitable and welcome. My teachers are Thai friends whose Buddhism is full of color and mystery, but utterly practical too. This blog is a tribute to the best of Thai Spirit and a place of dialogue about how to grow small.
